Rachel leaned against the brick under the small pedestrian bridge and waited. The overpass was in the center of the park, connecting the playground on the west from the basketball courts on the east. With any luck, the young Pakistani would show up any minute, looking to offer condolences.

At least that’s how Rachel hoped it would work. In the meantime, she had other things to consider. Surely the police would try to contact the dead man’s next of kin—in this case, Rachel’s out-of-town mother, Chen, who would then no doubt board the next flight and be home as soon as possible to handle the affairs and arrangements. Not that Rachel had a problem with seeing her mother—quite the opposite—but she wasn’t ready for her to be back just yet. The last few hours had been amazing, and Rachel relished the freedom and control.

Perhaps she could get to the officers beforehand and convince them her mother was dead? No, that’s so wrong. But instead of out of state, Chen could be out of the country. Rachel could insist she be the one to call her mother and deliver the news, seeing as it is a family matter.

“Hello? Hey, are you out here?”

Rachel perked up. The girl had taken the bait. “Over here.”

The girl spotted Rachel and trotted over. There were no lights under the bridge, but the two could make each other at close range.

“Sorry about running off like that,” Rachel said. “It’s just—”

“No, it’s cool. I totally get it.” The girl smiled. “I’m Azari, by the way.”

“Rachel.” She stood. “Azari. That’s really pretty.”

Azari shrugged. “Thanks, but I can’t take credit for it.” She chuckled.

How sweet. She’s trying to make me laugh to ease the pain. “Thanks for calling the police. I really appreciate it.”

“No problem.” Azari glanced over her shoulder. “Look, I can’t stay too long. I don’t want my parents to worry, but…you gonna be okay?”

“Yeah. I’ll be just fine.”

Azari’s face registered surprise. “Are you sure? ‘Cause it’s okay if you’re not—”

“Trust me, I’m good. The world is better off without Nicholas Bolton.” Rachel walked to the opposite side of the path, leaving her back to Azari. She turned. “The man was a bastard to me and my mom. He was always mean and very controlling. I think the only reason he got with my mom was because he thought she was the stereotypical docile Chinese woman—which, unfortunately, she is. But I’m not, and it created a lot of friction. I’m not a puppet, and I have my own life. So, yeah, I’m glad he’s dead. It means we’re finally free.” Rachel sat on one of the large rocks that lined the trail. She observed Azari, looking to see how she took her story.

Azari’s eyes dropped. She nodded. “I can kinda relate.”

Rachel cocked her head to the side like a puppy. She patted the space on the rock next to her.

Azari hesitated, then joined her. “My father, he’s a good man, but he’s very restrictive,” she said. “I never get to hang out with friends, and I never get to go anywhere.
